Sodium benzoate, the popular name is big soda, Hypo, belongs in transparent single crystal system.it is adourless and salty. Its specific gravity is 1.729. When be heated over 100 ,it losts the 5 crystal water. It is easily soluble in water and unsoluble in alcohol. It will be decomposed in acid liquid and have strong irreducibleness. It is easily dehydration when dry air over 33 and deliquescence in moist air.

It is a mono-functional, romatic acid, which is widely used as a building block for the synthesis of alkyd resins. It is also used as a preservative in many industrial applications, such as antimicrobial agent of latex, toothpaste, jam, dyeing and printing mordant, pharmaceutical and dye intermediates for preparing plasticizer, spices and the like, rust inhibitor of steel equipment and so on.
