Synthesis and Reactivity

CDI is synthesized by the reaction of phosgene with imidazole. Due to the high reactivity of phosgene, this reaction should be carried out under controlled conditions and in a well-ventilated environment. CDI contains a carbonyl group activated by two imidazole rings, making it highly reactive toward nucleophiles such as amines, alcohols, and carboxylic acids.
