Cocamide MEA (monoethanolamine) is a common ingredient derived from coconut oil fatty acids and ethanolamine, primarily used as a foam stabilizer, viscosity-increasing agent, and emulsifier in personal care products like shampoos, soaps, and cleansers. It is generally considered safe for use in rinse-off products and at concentrations up to 10% in leave-on products, although concerns exist regarding potential nitrosamine formation if free DEA is present as an impurity.

Key functions and characteristics of Cocamide MEA:

Foam stabilization and boosting: It enhances and stabilizes the lather in cleansers.
Viscosity increase: It thickens the aqueous (water-based) part of cosmetic formulations.
Emulsification: It helps to keep different ingredients in a product blended and stable.
Origin: It is typically made from coconut oil fatty acids and monoethanolamine (MEA).
Safety: The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that Cocamide MEA is safe for use as described, but cautioned against its use in formulations where N-nitroso compounds could form, due to potential trace impurities of Cocamide DEA. MEA vapor is highly toxic, but this is not a concern for Cocamide MEA in product formulations where vapor generation is not expected.

Properties ‌ : It has excellent thickening and foam stability, requires a small amount, and has excellent thickening and safety properties, good compatibility, and has excellent moisturizing, fragrance retention, decontamination and hard water resistance ‌.
