The characteristics of phosphorous acid (chemical formula: H₃PO₃) are closely related to its molecular structure, which contains 2 ionizable hydroxyl groups (-OH) and 1 hydrogen atom directly bonded to the phosphorus atom. At room temperature, it exists as a white crystalline solid; it is highly hygroscopic and has a slight pungent odor.

Its melting point is approximately 74°C, and its boiling point is around 200°C. When the temperature exceeds 180°C, it gradually decomposes into phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) and phosphine (PH₃). It is easily soluble in water, ethanol, and glycerol, but insoluble in non-polar solvents such as diethyl ether and benzene.

As one of the important oxygen-containing acids of phosphorus, the unique application scenarios of phosphorous acid are determined by its chemical properties (e.g., reducibility, diprotic acidity). Meanwhile, in industrial production and application, clear quality standards must be followed to ensure safety and effectiveness. Its main applications are as follows:

Intermediate for organophosphorus compound synthesis: It is used to prepare phosphites (e.g., triphenyl phosphite, dimethyl phosphite). These compounds are key raw materials for plastic plasticizers, flame retardants, and rubber antioxidants.
Metal surface treatment: Serving as a metal chelating agent and rust remover, it can form stable complexes with metal ions (e.g., Fe³⁺, Cu²⁺), and is applied in the surface rust-proof treatment of steel and aluminum materials.

Reducing agent: In the electronics industry, it is used for cleaning semiconductor materials; in chemical synthesis, it is used to reduce specific functional groups (e.g., reducing nitro groups to amino groups).
