    1.  Description

    Lipoic acid is a substance that has antioxidant effects superior to vitamins A, C, and E, and can eliminate free radicals that accelerate aging and disease. At the same time, lipoic acid has various beneficial effects on the human body. Lipoic acid is a limiting essential nutrient required by cells to produce energy using energy substances such as sugars. It is also an effective antioxidant and heavy metal chelating agent. The body can synthesize an appropriate amount of alpha lipoic acid, but when under stress or disease, its synthesis cannot meet the required amount. Like many important substances in the body, the content of alpha lipoic acid decreases with age.

    Among numerous antioxidants, lipoic acid has its unique multifunctionality. It is both water-soluble and lipophilic, and can protect all tissues and tissue gaps in the body. It can resist various free radicals such as oxidized anions, hydroxide ions, singlet oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide, and can chelate (bind and neutralize) with metal ions (such as iron, copper, cadmium, lead, mercury, etc.) to catalyze the generation of free radicals. Another important function of alpha lipoic acid is to lower blood sugar. Due to its combination of antioxidant, chelating metal, and blood sugar lowering properties, lipoic acid can prevent hyperglycemia and cross-linking (which are important causes of aging and closely related to wrinkle formation).

    2.  Application

         The antioxidant mechanism of alpha lipoic acid is that alpha lipoic acid has strong antioxidant capacity, and its ability to resist free radicals is 400 times better than VC and VE. It can remove reactive oxygen species that cause skin aging, and its molecules are smaller than VE. In addition, it is both water-soluble and lipophilic, so skin absorption is quite easy. Lipoic acid not only has a strong resistance to long-term oxidative damage, but also can effectively repair severe cellular oxidative damage that VC and VE cannot repair. Research has shown that lipoic acid can be converted into dihydrolipoic acid in the body, both of which have strong antioxidant properties and work synergistically in the body. At the same time, the molecular weight of alpha lipoic acid is between ascorbic acid and tocopherol, and it has amphiphilic properties of water and fat, which can exert comprehensive antioxidant effects in the body, known as the "universal antioxidant". The antioxidant efficacy of alpha lipoic acid is mainly reflected in three aspects:

        1. It can directly scavenge free radicals. After entering cells, alpha lipoic acid can directly scavenge free radicals such as hydroxyl radicals and singlet oxygen;

        2. Inhibiting metal induced oxidation, lipoic acid has the ability to chelate metal ions, thereby reducing the peroxidation reactions of lipids and other macromolecules caused by metal ions;

        3. Promoting the recovery of other antioxidant components, lipoic acid can restore the ability of endogenous antioxidants such as vitamin E and glutathione in the body, thereby enhancing the overall antioxidant capacity of the body. Assisting in "anti glycation" is a popular new health concept nowadays, which aims to reduce the damage to cells caused by the reaction end products generated by reducing sugars and proteins in the body under non enzymatic conditions, with the most typical being the reduction of damage to skin collagen. Collagen has a slower renewal rate than other proteins and is more susceptible to glycation reactions, leading to dull skin and decreased elasticity. In the anti glycation market, antioxidants are the absolute mainstay and can effectively resist the effects of glycation reactions on the skin. Lipoic acid has a dual protective effect of stabilizing blood sugar and preventing the binding of sugar and collagen in anti glycation, making it one of the key development directions for anti glycation beauty products. Meanwhile, the activation of vitamin C by alpha lipoic acid can compensate for the reduced levels caused by UV resistance, enhancing the skin's ability to resist external stimuli. Lipoic acid, which protects the liver, is a chelating agent for many metals. It works synergistically with dihydrolipoic acid to chelate metal ions such as cadmium, nickel, copper, lead, and trivalent iron, reducing the toxicity of metals to the liver. Therefore, it was also used as an antidote for food poisoning or metal poisoning in the early stages. At the same time, the synergistic effect of lipoic acid and other antioxidants in the body can reduce the damage of free radicals to liver cells, decrease inflammatory reactions, and maintain liver function. Studies have shown that lipoic acid has a clearing effect on fat accumulation caused by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, reducing the burden on the liver.

    3. Main Efficacy

    Alpha lipoic acid, also known as alpha lipoic acid, specifically refers to the naturally occurring form in nature. It was first isolated by Reed from pig liver in 1951. Lipoic acid is a disulfide compound of a type of vitamin, usually considered as a B vitamin. Lipoic acid is an important coenzyme in living organisms, serving as a crucial cofactor for pyruvate dehydrogenase, ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, and aminocaproic acid dehydrogenase. It is also an essential substance in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. The human body is capable of synthesizing sufficient amounts of alpha lipoic acid on its own, and there have been no cases of alpha lipoic acid deficiency. However, it was found in the study that lipoic acid supplementation in vitro can inhibit the lipid oxidation of nerve tissue, prevent the glycosylation of protein, inhibit aldose and chemobookinase, and prevent the conversion of glucose or galactose into sorbitol. It has been used as a drug to treat diabetes neuropathy or neurological complications in Europe. In addition to the role of coenzyme, lipoic acid also has a strong antioxidant function, which can eliminate free radicals that lead to accelerated aging and disease. It has a variety of functions such as anti-oxidation, anti-aging, improving immunity, preventing cardiovascular disease, and alleviating diabetes symptoms. At present, with the rise of antioxidant foods, lipoic acid is transitioning from traditional medicinal use to consumption. Due to its powerful health benefits, in June 2004, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reclassified it from a drug to a food. In addition, regions such as the United States and Canada have listed lipoic acid as a dietary supplement.

    Thioctic acid, 6,8-dithiooctanoic acid
    Lipoic acid is a class of compounds belonging to the B class vitamins and is the growth factor of yeast and some kinds of microorganisms. It can play the role of coenzyme role in a multi-enzyme system that is responsible for catalyzing the acyl transfer effect in the reaction of oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate into acetate and oxidative decarboxylation reaction of α-ketoglutarate into succinic acid.
    Its chemical name is 5-[3-(1,2-dithiol hetero-cycle)] pentanoic acid. The appearance is pale yellow crystals with the molecular weight being 206.33. DL-body: the melting point is 60~61 ℃. L-body (natural products): the melting point is 45~47.5 ℃. Optical rotation [α] D23 + 113 ℃. D-body (natural products): the melting point is 46~48 ℃. Optical rotation [α] D23 + 104 ℃. It is soluble in organic solvents but insoluble in water. It can be used for the prevention and treatment of acute hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, hepatic coma, fatty liver and other diseases.
    Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is synthesised enzymatically in the mitochondria from octanoic acid and plays a critical role in mitochondrial energy metabolism. ALA presents as two enantiomers: the R-(+) enantiomer, which is widely present in nature and is biologically active, and the S-(-) enantiomer, which is often included in synthetic-based ALA supplements but is believed to have limited biological activity.Formulations includes:R-alpha lipoic acid capsules, tablets, powders or dropsRacemic mixture of R- and S- alpha lipoic acid enantiomers in capsules, tablets, powders or dropsIntravenous administration of R-alpha lipoic acid
    Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) was discovered in 1951. It is a sulfur-containing coenzyme, and when it was first isolated and studied, its main function was thought to be in the Krebs Cycle.In 1988, ALA was discovered to be a potent antioxidant, and is active in both fat- and watersoluble regions of the cell.
