Procaine hydrochloride, also known as Elkaine or hydrochloride of p-oxypheenoxycaine, is an ester-type local anesthetic. Its mechanism of action is to reduce the instantaneous permeability of neurons to sodium, stabilize the nerve cell membrane, and prevent the generation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby exerting an anesthetic effect.
