Glabridin is a member of the class of hydroxyisoflavans that is (R)-isoflavan substituted by hydroxy groups at positions 2' and 4' and a 2,2-dimethyl-2H-pyran group across positions 7 and 8 respectively. It has a role as an antiplasmodial drug. It derives from a hydride of a (R)-isoflavan.

Mechanism of action

Glabridin is one of the main flavonoids in Guangguo licorice. It exhibits strong anti free radical oxidation activity in the cytochrome P450/NADPH oxidation system, which can significantly inhibit the production of free radicals in the metabolic process of the body, and prevent oxidative damage to biomolecules (low-density lipoprotein LDL, DNA) and cell walls that are sensitive to oxidation. It can prevent and cure some pathological changes related to free radical oxidation, such as atherosclerosis, cell aging, etc. In addition, Glabridin also has certain effects on lowering blood lipids and blood pressure.
