Dichloromethane (DCM) has the advantages of strong solubility and low toxicity, and is widely used in the production of safety film, polycarbonate, as well as in coatings, solvents, metal degreasing agents, aerosol propellants, polyurethane foaming agents, mold release agents, and paint strippers. DCM is a colorless liquid that serves as a reaction medium in the pharmaceutical industry for producing ampicillin, hydrobenzylpenicillin, and others. It is also used as a solvent in film production, petroleum dewaxing solvents, aerosol propellants, organic synthesis extractants, foaming agents for polyurethane foam plastics, and metal cleaning agents. In China, DCM is primarily utilized in film production and the pharmaceutical sector, accounting for 50% of total consumption in film production, 20% in pharmaceutical applications, 20% in cleaning agents and chemical industries, and 10% in other areas. DCM is also employed as a coolant in industrial refrigeration systems but poses significant hazards, as it can generate highly toxic phosgene when exposed to open flames or heated objects. It hydrolyzes in moist air to produce trace amounts of hydrogen chloride and can also promote hydrolysis under light exposure, increasing its corrosiveness to metals. It is used for grain fumigation and refrigeration in low-pressure chillers and air conditioning systems. Additionally, it serves as an auxiliary foaming agent in polyether-based polyurethane foam plastics and as a foaming agent for extruded polyurethane foam plastics.
