1. Description

L-5-Hydroxytryptophan is a naturally occurring amino acid compound and a hydroxylated derivative of tryptophan. It appears as colorless to pale pink crystals or white to off-white to pale beige powder. It is soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide (130 mg/mL) and water (approximately 2–10 mg/mL), and slightly soluble in organic solvents. It is sensitive to light and air and must be stored at 2–8°C, protected from light, in a sealed container, and under an inert gas atmosphere. This compound is a direct precursor in the biosynthetic pathway of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) in the body.
