1.  Description

Helicid is a natural glycoside compound isolated and extracted from the fruits of the Helicia nilgirica plant (a member of the Sapindaceae family). It appears as a white, crystalline powder in the form of needles, rods, or flakes; it is odorless and has a slightly bitter taste. It is soluble in hot water, slightly soluble in water, ethanol, or methanol, and insoluble. Store at 2–8°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and kept tightly sealed.

2.  Application

(1) Psychoneurotic Disorders Research: Used in studies of neurasthenia syndrome, neuroses, and related conditions; clinically applied to alleviate symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and sleep disorders.

(2) Pain Research: Used in studies of pain-related conditions such as vascular headaches and trigeminal neuralgia; exhibits analgesic activity.

(3) Antidepressant Research: Used to investigate the mechanisms of its antidepressant effects in a rat model of depression induced by chronic, unpredictable, mild stress. Studies indicate that a dose of 32 mg/kg can reverse stress-induced reduced sucrose preference and prolonged immobility time in the forced swimming test.

(4) Cognitive Function Studies: Used in research to improve learning and cognitive abilities; in a chronic stress rat model, it shortens the escape latency in the Morris water maze.
