Overview

α-Arbutin is a glycosylated hydroquinone derivative with CAS Number 84380-01-8, molecular formula C₁₂H₁₆O₇, and a molecular weight of approximately 272.25 Da. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, odorless or with a faint characteristic odor. Its melting point is 199–201°C. It is highly soluble in water (more soluble than β-arbutin), ethanol, propylene glycol, and glycerol; slightly soluble in methanol; and practically insoluble in organic solvents. Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light and kept tightly sealed, at 2–8°C or room temperature. As a diastereoisomer of β-arbutin, α-arbutin exhibits higher chemical and enzymatic stability and serves as a highly effective and safe tyrosinase inhibitor.
