1. Description

4-Aminobutyric acid is a naturally occurring four-carbon non-protein amino acid that is widely distributed in its free form in a variety of organisms, ranging from bacteria to mammals. This compound acts as the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system and participates in the regulation of various physiological functions by modulating neuronal excitability. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, soluble in water (100 mg/mL) and slightly soluble in common organic solvents. Its melting point is 195–204°C (decomposition). The molecular formula is C₄H₉NO₂, with a molecular weight of approximately 103.12 Da and an XLogP of −3.2; it is highly hydrophilic. Store in a sealed container, protected from light, in a cool, dry place; room temperature storage is sufficient. This compound was approved as a new food resource by the Chinese Ministry of Health in 2009. In the United States, it is used as an ingredient in dietary supplements and also as a drug (aminobutyric acid) for clinical treatment.
