It is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₁₂H₁₂N₂O₂S. It appears as a white or off-white crystalline powder and is slightly soluble in water. It is also soluble in alcohols, chloroform, and dilute inorganic acids.
As a classic sulfone antibacterial drug, its main application is as an anti-leprosy medication. It interferes with the folic acid metabolism of bacteria, exerting inhibitory or even bactericidal effects on Mycobacterium leprae.

Main application fields
‌Treatment of leprosy‌: It is one of the core drugs for treating various types of leprosy. To avoid drug resistance, it needs to be used in combination with clofazimine, rifampicin, and other anti-leprosy drugs.
‌Treatment of skin diseases‌: It is applicable to herpes-like dermatitis and can also be used to treat pustular skin diseases, pemphigus, necrotizing pustular diseases, and various inflammatory skin diseases such as pityriasis rosea.
‌Other uses‌: It can be combined with trimethoprim for the treatment of pneumocystis pneumonia, or with pyrimethamine for the prevention of tertian malaria.
