Nattokinase (NK), also referred to as subtilisin-like serine protease, is an enzyme produced by the bacterium Bacillus subtilis natto during the fermentation of the traditional Japanese food natto. It belongs to the serine protease family and is well known for its fibrinolytic (clot-dissolving) activity.
Scientifically, nattokinase has been shown to exert multiple cardiovascular benefits:
- Fibrinolytic activity (thrombus dissolution):
NK can directly degrade fibrin, the main structural protein in blood clots, and also enhance the body’s endogenous fibrinolytic system (e.g., by promoting plasmin activity), thereby helping to reduce thrombus formation. - Reduction of blood viscosity:
