  • Description

Tetrafluoromethane is a colorless, non-flammable gas. As a compressed gas at room temperature, CF4 is one of the most stable organic compounds. At 900℃, CF4 does not react with Cu, Ni, W, Mo, and only slowly decompose at carbon arc temperature. When burned with combustible gases, they decompose to produce toxic fluoride. In case of high heat, the pressure inside the container increases, there is a risk of cracking and explosion.

    Air and Water Reactions:

No rapid reaction with air. No rapid reaction with water.

    Reactive Group:

    Fluorinated Organic Compounds

    Reactivity Profile:

The reaction of aluminum with various halogenated hydrocarbons produces a self-sustaining reaction with sufficient heat to melt aluminum pieces, examples of other halogenated hydrocarbons are fluorotrichloromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, chlorodifluoromethane, tetrafluoromethane. The vigor of the reaction appears to be dependent on the combined degree of fluorination and the vapor pressure [Chem. Eng. News 39(27):44. 1961].

    Autoignition Temperature:

    >/= 1100 °C|>1100 °C

    Physical Dangers:

The gas is heavier than air and may accumulate in lowered spaces causing a deficiency of oxygen.

    Critical Temperature & Pressure:

Critical temperature: 299.00 K; critical pressure: 4.82 MPa
