Product Application

5.1 Polyester Industry (Dominant Use, >90%)

Polyester Fiber (PET Fiber): ​ EG reacts with Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) via polycondensation to produce PET chips, which are melt-spun into polyester staple fiber and filament (textile grade) or drawn into tire cord (industrial grade).

Bottle Resin: ​ PET is blow-molded into bottles for beverages (water, soda), edible oil, and food packaging.

Film Resin: ​ Produces BOPET film used in electrical insulation, packaging, and LCD substrates.

5.2 Antifreeze & Coolants (Second Major Use)

Automotive Engine Coolant: ​ Mixed with water (typically 1:1 ratio), EG lowers the freezing point to approx. -37°C and raises the boiling point to 107°C, preventing engine freeze-up in winter and boil-over in summer.

Industrial Heat Transfer Fluid: ​ Used as a secondary refrigerant in HVAC systems, solar water heaters, and brewery cooling systems.

5.3 Chemical Intermediates

Glycol Ethers: ​ Reacted with alcohols to produce solvents for paints, inks, and brake fluids (e.g., 2-Ethoxyethanol).

Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR): ​ Acts as a cross-linking agent for producing Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP).

Polyurethanes: ​ Used as a chain extender or low molecular weight polyol component.

5.4 Gas Dehydration

Natural Gas Dehydration: ​ Concentrated EG solutions are used as a liquid desiccant to remove water vapor from natural gas pipelines, preventing hydrate formation (an alternative to Triethylene Glycol / TEG).
