  Centella asiatica is often found in rolled-up clumps. The roots are cylindrical, 2-4 cm long and 1-1.5 mm in diameter, with a pale yellow or grayish-yellow surface. The stems are slender, curved, brownish-yellow, with fine longitudinal wrinkles, and often bear thread-like roots at the nodes. The leaves are mostly wrinkled and broken; intact leaves, when spread out, are nearly round or kidney-shaped, 1-4 cm in diameter, gray-green, with coarse blunt teeth along the margin; the petioles are 3-6 cm long and twisted. The umbellate inflorescence grows in the axils, small in size. The schizocarp is flat-round, with prominent raised longitudinal ridges and fine reticulate patterns, and the fruit stalk is very short. It has a faint aroma and a bland taste.

  Centella asiatica extract is derived from the whole plant of Centella asiatica (L.) Urb., an umbelliferous plant. Commercial extracts are typically standardized to contain 9% centella acids. Note: The specification for standard Centella extract is as follows: 29%–30% centella acid, 40% madecassoside, 29%–30% hydroxycentella acid, and 1%–2% hydroxymadecassoside.

  Medicinal Components
Centella asiatica mainly contains triterpenoid acids and triterpenoid saponins. The triterpenoid acids include Asiatic acid, Brahmic acid, Isobrahmic acid, Madagascaric acid, and betulinic acid. The triterpenoid saponins include Asiaticoside, Madecassoside, Brahmoside, Brahminoside, Thankuniside, and Isothankuniside. Minpei K et al. isolated five new triterpenoid glycoside compounds from Centella asiatica.
Polyene alkynes: The underground parts of Centella asiatica contain various polyalkyne compounds, with at least 16 types isolated.
