Its primary function is to act as a powerful chemoattractant and pro-inflammatory signaling molecule that orchestrates the innate immune response, particularly the recruitment and activation of white blood cells.

Core Biological and Immunological Functions

Potent Neutrophil Chemoattractant: LTB4 is one of the most powerful natural chemoattractants known. It creates a chemical gradient that directs neutrophils out of the bloodstream and directly to the site of infection, tissue injury, or inflammation.

Leukocyte Activation and Adhesion: It binds to high-affinity receptors (BLT1) on neutrophils and macrophages, stimulating them to adhere to blood vessel walls (diapedesis), release lysosomal enzymes, and undergo degranulation.

Phagocytosis and Pathogen Clearance: LTB4 enhances the ability of macrophages and neutrophils to engulf and destroy invading bacteria and fungi. It also drives the production of antimicrobial reactive oxygen species (ROS).
