      Product Detail

    Product Name: Iodine Trichloride
    Chemical Formula: ICl₃
    CAS Number: 865-44-1

    Physical Properties

    • Appearance & Forms: It typically exists as a yellow or brownish-yellow crystalline solid. However, it is highly unstable at room temperature and readily decomposes into iodine monochloride (ICl) and chlorine gas. Therefore, it is often encountered in the form of an equilibrium mixture with ICl.
    • Melting Point: Approximately 63 °C (for pure ICl₃), but it usually begins to decompose before reaching this point.
    • Solubility: Reacts with water rather than simply dissolving. It is soluble in certain organic solvents like carbon tetrachloride and chloroform, though it also tends to undergo decomposition in these environments.
    • Odor: Pungent, irritating odor due to the release of chlorine gas upon exposure to moisture.

    Chemical Properties

    • Extreme Moisture Sensitivity & Hydrolysis: Highly reactive with water. Upon contact with moisture, it hydrolyzes violently to produce hydrogen chloride (HCl), iodic acid (HIO₃), and other oxidized iodine species.
    • Strong Oxidizing & Chlorinating Agent: It acts as a powerful oxidizer and a source of electrophilic chlorine. It readily participates in halogenation reactions, introducing chlorine atoms into various organic substrates.
    • Thermal Instability: Decomposes gradually even at room temperature, releasing toxic and corrosive chlorine gas. Heating accelerates this decomposition significantly.
    • Incompatibility: Chemically incompatible with water, strong reducing agents, alkali metals, and combustible materials. Contact with these substances can trigger violent exothermic reactions, fires, or explosions.
    • Toxicity & Corrosiveness: Highly toxic if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin. It causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage. Its vapors are extremely irritating and corrosive to the respiratory tract.

    Main Applications

    • Organic Synthesis & Halogenation: Primarily used as a specialized chlorinating agent in fine chemical manufacturing. It is employed to introduce chlorine atoms into aromatic and aliphatic compounds for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and specialty intermediates.
    • Analytical Chemistry: Historically utilized in analytical chemistry, particularly in the determination of iodine values (a measure of unsaturation in fats and oils) and in volumetric analysis.
    • Chemical Intermediates: Serves as a precursor for synthesizing other complex iodine-chlorine compounds and specialized reagents used in advanced research and industrial processes.
    • Polymerization Catalysts: Occasionally applied as a catalyst or initiator in specific polymerization reactions due to its strong oxidative and electrophilic nature.
