      Product Detail

    Sample name:ethane R170

    CAS:74-84-0

    Molecular formula :C2H6
Ethane is mainly used for cracking to produce ethylene and as a refrigerant in refrigeration facilities. It is also applied as standard gas and for preparing special standard gas mixtures.
It is a colorless, flammable liquefied gas. When stored in liquefied gas cylinders, its pressure equals its vapor pressure (37.02 kgf/cm² @ 21.1 °C).
Its major applications include etching gas, standard gas and calibration gas, as well as heat treatment in the metallurgical industry. It serves as a raw material to synthesize ethylene, vinyl chloride, chloroethane, acetaldehyde, ethanol, ethylene oxide glycol and other chemicals. Additionally, it can be used as fuel and refrigerant.
As a refrigerant, ethane is adopted in low-temperature refrigeration systems, also known as R170 (Freon 170).
In small-scale scientific research, liquid ethane is used for vitrifying water-rich samples in electron microscopy. Thin water films are rapidly immersed in liquid ethane at -150 °C or lower. The freezing process occurs so swiftly that water cannot form ice crystals. This rapid freezing preserves the original structure of soft specimens in their liquid state, avoiding structural damage caused by ice crystal formation.

    Air and Water Reactions:

    Highly flammable.

    Reactive Group:

    Hydrocarbons, Aliphatic Saturated

    Reactivity Alerts:

    Highly Flammable

    Reactivity Profile:

Saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as ETHANE, may be incompatible with strong oxidizing agents like nitric acid. Charring of the hydrocarbon may occur followed by ignition of unreacted hydrocarbon and other nearby combustibles. In other settings, aliphatic saturated hydrocarbons are mostly unreactive. They are not affected by aqueous solutions of acids, alkalis, most oxidizing agents, and most reducing agents. Peroxidizable|ETHANE, [REFRIGERATED] is relatively inactive chemically except for its flammability.

    Autoignition Temperature:

    Flammable Limits:

Lower flammable limit: 3.0% by volume; Upper flammable limit: 12.5% by volume.

    Physical Dangers:

The gas mixes well with air, explosive mixtures are easily formed. As a result of flow, agitation, etc., electrostatic charges can be generated.

    Heat of Vaporization:

    5.16 kJ/mol at 25 °C

    Critical Temperature & Pressure:

Critical temperature: 32 °C; critical pressure: 48.2 atm
