Overview: Efinaconzole is a small-molecule triazole antifungal drug developed by Kaken Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (Japan) and Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (Canada). It was approved for marketing in Canada in October 2013 and in the United States in June 2014, respectively, for the treatment of onychomycosis (fungal nail infection of the toenails). It was the first topical triazole antifungal drug to be marketed. Pharmacological Action: Efinaconzole is the first topical triazole antifungal drug developed for the treatment of distal lateral subungual onychomycosis (DLSO), the most common type of onychomycosis. The pathogen first invades the distal subungual nail bed, causing thickening and hyperkeratosis under the nail bed. The nail plate may turn white, brown, or grayish-brown, with an uneven surface, loss of luster, and eventual loss or brittleness. Jublia is a topical solution applied via a unique built-in dosage-controlled nail brush. The medication dries quickly, eliminating the need to remove excess medication and eliminating concerns about systemic side effects such as drug interactions or acute liver injury.
