What is Finerenone?
Finerenone (BAY 94-8862) is a non-steroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) designed to block excessive mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) activation. This overactivation drives inflammation and fibrosis in tissues such as the kidneys, heart, and blood vessels, exacerbating conditions like chronic kidney disease (CKD) and heart failure (HF). By inhibiting MR-mediated sodium retention and pathological pathways, finerenone mitigates organ damage without the high potassium risk (hyperkalemia) associated with older MRA therapies.
