    Product Overview

Valsartan is a highly selective, non-peptide angiotensin II type 1 (AT₁) receptor antagonist. It works by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to AT₁ receptors in vascular smooth muscle and adrenal glands, thereby inhibiting the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II. Unlike ACE inhibitors, valsartan does not affect bradykinin metabolism, resulting in a lower incidence of dry cough as a side effect.

The chemical name of valsartan is N-(1-oxopentyl)-N-[[2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl]methyl]-L-valine. It has a molecular formula of C₂₄H₂₉N₅O₃ and a molecular weight of 435.52 g/mol. The compound is a white to off-white hygroscopic crystalline powder with a melting point of 116-117°C. It is slightly soluble in water, freely soluble in anhydrous ethanol, and practically insoluble in methylene chloride.

    Clinical Indications & Therapeutic Benefits

This product is indicated for the treatment of:

    • Essential hypertension: First-line treatment for adults and children 6 years of age and older, with proven efficacy in reducing both systolic and diastolic blood pressure
    • Heart failure (NYHA class II-IV) : Reduces cardiovascular mortality and heart failure hospitalizations in patients intolerant to ACE inhibitors
    • Post-myocardial infarction: Improves survival in clinically stable patients with left ventricular dysfunction or heart failure following MI
    • Chronic kidney disease: Has renoprotective effects, reducing proteinuria and slowing disease progression

Valsartan is available in oral dosage forms including tablets (40mg, 80mg, 160mg, 320mg), capsules, and oral solutions. It is often used in combination with other antihypertensive agents such as hydrochlorothiazide (Valsartan/HCTZ) or amlodipine (Valsartan/Amlodipine) for enhanced blood pressure control.
