Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene Usage And Synthesis

Description	Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is a liquid rubber with a long non-polar carbon chain. Because of its low glass transition temperature, high elasticity, high water resistance, and hydrophobicity, HTPB is widely used in adhesives, foam, rocket propellant, and other fields. HTPB is a commonly used binding polymer in industry to produce polyurethanes. HTPB synthesis via allylic radical propagation leads to varied compositions and conformations that govern this polymer's bulk physical and mechanical properties. The low surface energy and flexibility at low temperatures of HTPB-based polyurethane elastomers have been extensively studied [1-2].
Toxics Screening Level	The ITSL for butadiene homopolymer has been changed from 0.04 μg/m3 to 0.1 μg/m3 based on an annual averaging time.

Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene Preparation Products And Raw materials

1. Molecular Structure

It is a telechelic liquid rubber with a flexible long hydrocarbon chain. A hydroxyl group (-OH) is attached to each end of the molecular chain.

General formula: $\mathrm{HO-(C_4H_6)_n-OH}$

The polymer chain consists of randomly distributed three butadiene units:

Trans-1,4 units (linear straight chain segments, major proportion)
Cis-1,4 units (flexible bent segments)
1,2-vinyl side chains (pendant double bonds on the main chain)

The whole molecular chain is flexible and coiled, with abundant carbon-carbon double bonds along the backbone. The terminal hydroxyl groups can crosslink with isocyanates for curing.

2. Raw Liquid Form (Visual Look at Room Temperature)

Color: Colorless to pale light yellow, translucent. Higher molecular weight grades appear yellower; low-viscosity types are nearly clear.
Texture: Highly viscous oily liquid, similar to thick corn syrup or light honey. It draws filaments when poured and flows slowly. It thickens drastically at low temperature and flows better when heated.
Purity: Industrial pure HTPB contains no suspended solids or turbidity.

3. Cured Solid Form

After crosslinking reaction with isocyanate curing agents, it turns into pale yellow translucent elastic rubber, soft, low-temperature resistant, waterproof and insulating.
