Chemical Properties
Perfluorohexane consists solely of carbon and fluorine atoms. It features low chemical reactivity and is inert under ordinary conditions. It can be used as a non-polar organic solvent for organic chemical reactions and finds wide applications in fundamental organic chemistry research.
Medical Applications
Perfluorohexane exhibits high affinity for oxygen and favorable biocompatibility. It has been applied as an ultrasound imaging contrast medium. It has been extensively studied as an oxygen delivery medium. Nevertheless, its high hydrophobicity leads to a short in-vivo half-life, restricting effective accumulation in target tissues. It is reported that fluorinated modified materials can improve its in-vivo stability, as fluorinated segments share similar molecular structures and can be incorporated into perfluorohexane droplets.
