    —— Product Detail ——

      • Product Overview

Aluminum sulfate, commonly known as alum, is an inorganic salt with the molecular formula Al₂(SO₄)₃ and a molecular weight of 342.15 g/mol (anhydrous). This white crystalline powder or granules is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals globally, with the anhydrous form being highly hygroscopic and readily absorbing moisture from the air.

Aluminum sulfate serves as a cornerstone chemical in water and wastewater treatment as a primary coagulant for removing suspended solids, turbidity, and phosphates. It is also extensively used in the paper industry as a sizing agent, in textile dyeing as a mordant, and in various other industrial applications including pH adjustment, catalyst preparation, and as a crosslinking agent in polymer chemistry.

        Synthetic Process

Aluminum sulfate is manufactured through the following main routes:

        • Bauxite digestion method: Bauxite ore (containing aluminum hydroxide) is digested with concentrated sulfuric acid at elevated temperatures (100-150°C). The resulting solution is filtered to remove insoluble impurities, concentrated, and crystallized to obtain the product. A significant byproduct of this reaction is silica, which is removed by filtration.

        • Aluminum hydroxide method: High-purity aluminum hydroxide is reacted with sulfuric acid in a controlled exothermic reaction. This method yields a higher purity product suitable for reagent-grade applications.

        • Aluminum metal method: Metallic aluminum is dissolved in sulfuric acid, producing hydrogen gas and aluminum sulfate solution, which is then concentrated and crystallized.

Mechanism of Action / Application Principles

        • Water Treatment Coagulation: When dissolved in water, aluminum sulfate hydrolyzes to form aluminum hydroxide [Al(OH)₃] flocs. These positively charged flocs neutralize the negative surface charges of suspended particles and colloids, causing them to agglomerate and settle. Optimal coagulation occurs at pH 6.0-7.5. The hydrolysis reaction is: Al₂(SO₄)₃ + 6H₂O → 2Al(OH)₃↓ + 3H₂SO₄

        • Paper Sizing: Aluminum sulfate reacts with rosin size to form insoluble aluminum resinate, which precipitates onto cellulose fibers. This hydrophobic coating improves paper's resistance to water penetration, enhances print quality, and increases sheet strength.

        • Textile Mordant: As a mordant, aluminum sulfate forms coordination complexes with natural dye molecules, fixing dyes to fibers and improving color fastness.

        • pH Adjustment and Crosslinking: Used as a pH adjuster in various processes and as a crosslinking agent for anionic polymers (e.g., polyacrylic acid) in hydrogel formation.
