1. Physical Properties
At room temperature, it is an odorless, colorless, transparent, viscous, hygroscopic liquid with a slightly sweet taste. It is completely miscible with water, methanol, and diethyl ether, and is also soluble in aromatic solvents such as toluene. It exhibits excellent solubility for substances such as cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, and castor oil, but is immiscible with alkanes. It is highly hygroscopic and spontaneously absorbs moisture from the environment when exposed to air.
2. Chemical Properties
(1) It undergoes esterification reactions with carboxylic acids and acid anhydrides to form the corresponding esters and serves as an important intermediate in the synthesis of plasticizers.
(2) It can undergo etherification reactions with halogenated hydrocarbons and alkyl sulfates to form ether derivatives with varying degrees of substitution, which are widely used in water-based solvent systems.
(3) Under acidic catalytic conditions, it can undergo acetalization reactions or halogenation reactions to replace hydroxyl groups with halogen atoms, serving as a link in organic synthesis.
(4) It is chemically stable at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, does not decompose spontaneously, and poses no risk of polymerization; however, it reacts violently upon contact with strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, strong bases, and peroxides, presenting safety hazards.
(5) Overall, it is classified as a low-toxicity chemical. It is virtually not absorbed by the human body upon skin contact and causes only very mild irritation to the eyes and broken skin.
3. Main Applications
(1) Personal care and fragrance industry: This is its core application area. Due to its extremely low odor and excellent solubility, it is the solvent of choice for high-end perfumes and fragranced products. It can account for over 50% of a perfume formulation, effectively prolonging the scent’s longevity and enhancing fragrance stability. In cosmetics, it serves as a coupling agent and humectant, helping to uniformly blend oil and water phases while locking in moisture on the skin’s surface. It is widely added to products such as hair curling lotions, body washes, cold creams, lipsticks, and body lotions, and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.
(2) ‌Resin and Coatings Industry‌: As a core raw material for the production of unsaturated polyester resins and saturated resins, it significantly improves the flexibility, crack resistance, and weather resistance of finished resin products, addressing the common issue of yellowing in ordinary resins over time. It also serves as a highly effective solvent in coatings, inks, and industrial cleaning agents, improving the system’s leveling properties, reducing VOC emissions during production and use, and enhancing the adhesion and gloss of coatings.
(3)‌Specialized Applications Across Multiple Fields‌: Industrial-grade products serve as key components in antifreeze, active ingredients in paint strippers, and stabilizers in pesticide formulations. They are also used as humectants in tobacco processing to prevent the tobacco from drying out, hardening, and deteriorating. Food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade products comply with stringent safety regulations and can be used as humectants and drug solvents/carriers in the production of baked goods, oral solutions, and topical ointments. Certain high-purity grades can also be used in precision cleaning processes during electronic semiconductor manufacturing.

Standard packaging includes 200 kg galvanized closed-top steel drums and 1,000 L IBC containers. For large volumes, bulk transport via tank containers is available. Storing and transporting the product in a sealed, light-protected environment effectively delays oxidation and discoloration.
