                                              Synthetic Process

                                              1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate is synthesized through the following routes:

                                              • Quaternization: 1-Methylimidazole is reacted with 1-bromobutane to form 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([BMIM]Br).

                                              • Anion exchange: [BMIM]Br is reacted with a silver or lithium triflate salt to exchange the bromide anion for the triflate anion.

                                              • Purification: The ionic liquid is purified by extraction, washing, and drying under vacuum.
