  • Description

Sulfonamide, also known as p-aminobenzenesulfonamide, sulfonamide, p-anilinesulfonamide, or p-sulfonamide aniline, precipitates from an aqueous ethanol solution as white, leaf-like crystals or a crystalline powder. It is odorless, initially slightly bitter, then sweet, and changes color upon exposure to light. Its relative molecular mass is 172.22. Its relative density is 1.08. Its melting point is 165–166℃. It is insoluble in benzene, ether, and chloroform; soluble in water (g/L): 2.6 at 10℃, 7.5 at 25℃, 17.0 at 40℃, 40.0 at 60℃, and 477 at 100℃. It is also soluble in ethanol (1g per 37ml of ethanol), 1g per 5ml of acetone, soluble in glycerol and propylene glycol, and soluble in hydrochloric acid and sodium (potassium) hydroxide solutions. An aqueous solution of sulfonamide is neutral on litmus paper; a 0.5% aqueous solution has a pH of 5.8–6.1. Its color darkens under light. Large doses of sulfonamides in humans can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and damage to the liver and kidneys. They can also cause tinnitus, dizziness, headaches, and even various neurological symptoms, leading to death.
