    BOEHMITE | CAS 1318-23-6

    Product Overview

Boehmite (CAS: 1318-23-6) is an aluminum oxide hydroxide mineral with the chemical formula AlO(OH), belonging to the orthorhombic crystal system. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder that serves as a key precursor for the production of various alumina phases and is widely used as a functional filler, catalyst support, flame retardant additive, and coating material across multiple industries.

    CAS Number 1318-23-6
    Molecular Formula AlO(OH) or AlHO2
    Molecular Weight 59.99 g/mol
    MDL Number MFCD00278830
    EINECS Number 215-284-3
    Crystal System Orthorhombic
HS Code 2818.10 (Aluminum oxide, other than artificial corundum)

    Product Description

Boehmite is a white, free-flowing hydrated alumina powder with a boehmite crystal structure. It is a high-temperature resistant aluminum oxide-hydroxide that exhibits excellent thermal stability up to approximately 500°C before undergoing phase changes. The material is insoluble in water but soluble in strong acids and hot alkali solutions. Boehmite can be easily dispersed in monovalent acid solutions such as nitric acid and acetic acid, achieving stable dispersion concentrations up to 25% by weight.

Boehmite is a major component of bauxite ore and serves as an important chemical raw material. Its unique crystal structure and high purity make it an excellent precursor for preparing various alumina phases widely used in ceramics, electronics, adsorption, and catalysis applications.

    Applications

    Advanced Ceramics

Boehmite is used as a key ingredient in the production of high-performance ceramics, enhancing mechanical strength and thermal stability in applications such as aerospace and automotive components. It also serves as an excellent precursor for preparing various alumina phases used in the ceramics industry.

    Catalysis

Boehmite serves as a catalyst support in various chemical reactions, enhancing reaction rates and selectivity in the production of fine chemicals and fuels. It is widely used as a carrier material for catalytic converters.

    Lithium Battery Separator Coating

Boehmite is applied as a coating material on lithium battery separators. Its plate-like crystal structure expands when heated, closing the current conduction pores to block current transmission and improve battery safety. It also provides excellent thermal conductivity and flame retardancy.

    Inkjet Printing Media

As an ink-absorbing material, boehmite is applied to RC photo paper, lightbox film, wide-format printing, and film for inkjet printing media. Substrates can include PE, PP, PET, and PVC. The material provides waterproofing, fast ink absorption, high gloss, and vibrant color reproduction.

    Flame Retardant Additive

Boehmite functions as an inorganic flame retardant additive in printed circuit boards, electronic substrates, rubber, plastics, and cable materials. It improves heat resistance, water resistance, aging resistance, and mechanical strength.

    Paints, Coatings & Inks

Boehmite is used as an additive in coatings, paints, and inks. Its plate-like crystalline particles prevent fluid intrusion, block gas permeation, and improve moisture resistance, water resistance, and aging resistance.

    Electronics

Boehmite is utilized in the fabrication of dielectric materials for capacitors and other electronic components, providing superior insulation properties compared to traditional materials.

    Environmental Remediation

Boehmite acts as an effective adsorbent for heavy metals and pollutants in water treatment processes.

    Biomedical Applications

Boehmite is employed in drug delivery systems and tissue engineering, where its biocompatibility and nanoscale properties improve the efficacy of therapeutic agents.

    Other Applications

    • Sol-gel ceramics

    • Refractory materials

    • Rheology control and surface frictionising

    • Textile and paper industries

    • Abrasive materials
