Delta Sleep Inducing Peptide (DSIP) is a biochemical and molecular biological term published in 2008. It refers to the nonapeptide structure isolated by Schoenenberger and Monnier from the cerebral venous hemodialysis fluid that induces sleep by electrically stimulating the inner nucleus of the rabbit thalamic medullary plate in 1977, with a molecular weight of approximately 849,000. The amino acid sequence of this peptide is WAGGDASGE, with the chemical formula C35H48N10O15 (CAS No. 62568-57-4), and it possesses neuroinhibitory and antioxidant properties. Studies have shown that DSIP can rapidly induce animals to enter slow-wave sleep by enhancing GABA activity and inhibiting NMDA receptors, and the electroencephalogram shows characteristic theta waves.
Subsequent studies have found that DSIP not only induces non-rapid eye movement sleep but also regulates rapid eye movement sleep. Its mechanism of action is controversial: most experiments suggest that it is a weak hypnotic factor that only promotes sleep when stress is present, and some studies show that a single use can significantly change the wakefulness state. This peptide is prepared through chemical synthesis and should be stored in the form of freeze-dried powder at -20℃. It is mainly used in the fields of neuroscience and cancer research.
