Description:
SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide or MTP-131) is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂, where Dmt is 2,6-dimethyl-L-tyrosine). It selectively targets the inner mitochondrial membrane by binding to cardiolipin, a phospholipid essential for mitochondrial function. This binding stabilizes cardiolipin, maintains mitochondrial membrane integrity, reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and increases ATP generation. SS-31 also prevents the opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, which is associated with mitochondrial stress.

SS-31 is widely studied in research on mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroprotection, neurodegenerative diseases (including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease), cardiovascular diseases, muscle disorders, and inflammation-related conditions. It has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier and accumulate in the inner mitochondrial membrane at concentrations over 5000 times higher than in the cytoplasm.
