Product Overview

Basic Orange 14 (CAS 10127-02-3), commonly known as Acridine Orange, is a fluorescent dye with the molecular formula C₁₇H₂₀ClN₃·0.5ZnCl₂ and a molecular weight of approximately 369.96 g/mol. It is an orange-red to deep red powder that is soluble in water. Acridine Orange is widely used as a biological stain for nucleic acid detection in fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, and gel electrophoresis.

Synthetic Process

Acridine Orange is synthesized by the condensation of dimethylaniline with phosgene followed by cyclization and salt formation.

Mechanism of Action

Acridine Orange intercalates into nucleic acids, exhibiting green fluorescence when bound to DNA and orange-red fluorescence when bound to RNA. This differential staining makes it valuable for nucleic acid detection.
