The active functional group in its molecular structure is the sulfhydryl group (-SH) on the cysteine residue. This unique structure enables GSH to directly bind with free radicals, heavy metals (such as lead, mercury, and arsenic), and toxins (such as mustard gas), thereby exerting a crucial detoxification effect.

Mechanism of Action

GSH serves as a crucial intracellular regulator of metabolism. It functions not only as a prosthetic group for glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase but also as a coenzyme for glyoxalase and triose dehydrogenase, participating in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and carbohydrate metabolism.
