    Product Description

    Barium carbonate is a white, dense powder with a specific gravity of approximately 4.3 g/cm³. It is insoluble in water and most organic solvents, but dissolves in dilute mineral acids (hydrochloric, nitric, or acetic acid) with effervescence due to carbon dioxide formation. The compound is thermally stable up to about 800°C, above which it decomposes into barium oxide and carbon dioxide.

    Barium carbonate is produced by the precipitation reaction of barium sulfide or barium chloride with sodium carbonate or by carbonation of barium hydroxide. It is available in several grades, including industrial grade (96% – 99%), high-purity grade (99.5%+), and electronic grade for specialized applications.

    Salts, basic, such as BARIUM CARBONATE, are generally soluble in water. The resulting solutions contain moderate concentrations of hydroxide ions and have pH's greater than 7.0. They react as bases to neutralize acids. These neutralizations generate heat, but less or far less than is generated by neutralization of the bases in reactivity group 10 (Bases) and the neutralization of amines. They usually do not react as either oxidizing agents or reducing agents but such behavior is not impossible.
