    Sodium Molybdate

    Physical & Chemical Properties

Appearance & Form: White crystalline powder or shining crystal flakes; odorless.

Solubility: Highly soluble in water, forming a clear, colorless to faint yellow solution; practically insoluble in ethanol.

Assay (Sodium Molybdate, Na2MoO4): Not less than 99.0% min (anhydrous or dihydrate basis).

pH Value: Typically 7.0 to 10.5 (5% aqueous solution).

    Melting Point: Approximately 687°C (anhydrous).

    Quality & Safety Standards

Molybdenum Content (Mo): Typically 39.0% min (for dihydrate) or 46.5% min (for anhydrous).

Chloride (Cl) & Sulfate (SO4): Strict impurity limits, typically max 0.02% to 0.05% each.

Heavy Metals (as Pb): Not more than 10 to 20 ppm max.

Safety & Handling: Low toxicity compared to other heavy metal salts, but can cause eye and respiratory irritation upon dust contact. Use standard protective gear such as safety goggles, gloves, and a dust mask during handling.

    Recommended Applications

Water Treatment & Corrosion Inhibitors: Widely utilized as a cathodic corrosion inhibitor in industrial cooling water systems, boiler water treatment, and metalworking fluids.

Agriculture & Fertilizers: Used as an essential micro-nutrient source of molybdenum in agricultural fertilizers to prevent whip-tail in crops and correct soil deficiencies.

Chemical Synthesis & Catalysts: Employed as a chemical intermediate and catalyst precursor for manufacturing other molybdenum compounds, pigments, and dyes.

Metal Finishing: Used in electroplating and metal surface treatments for corrosion protection.

    ECHEMI Editorial Reference
Sodium molybdate is a useful source of molybdate. It is often found as Sodium molybdate dihydrate. In murine models, Sodium molybdate dihydrate inactivated both the active and inactive form of the gluco corticoid receptor complex. With the use of nitrites, molybdate salts have been shown to reduce the emission of hydrogen sulfide from swine manure.
