    Product Overview

    Agarose is a linear polysaccharide derived from agar, consisting of repeating units of agarobiose with the molecular formula C₂₄H₃₈O₁₉ and a molecular weight of approximately 9,000-10,000 Da. This white to off-white powder is a widely used gelling agent in molecular biology, particularly for gel electrophoresis of nucleic acids. It forms a porous gel matrix that separates DNA and RNA fragments based on size, making it an essential tool for genetic analysis, PCR product verification, and DNA fragment purification. Its excellent gel strength, low electroendosmosis, and high clarity make it suitable for a wide range of electrophoretic applications.

    Synthetic Process

    Agarose is obtained through the following routes:

    • Extraction from red algae: Agarose is extracted from red seaweed species (such as Gracilaria and Gelidium) using hot water extraction, followed by purification and fractionation.

    • Purification: The crude extract is purified by precipitation, washing, and drying to obtain high-purity agarose powder.
