Pure product is colorless clear liquid, boiling point 90.3℃, flash point about 17℃, slightly soluble in water, miscible with most common organic solvents. With reactive methyl and carbonyl functional groups, it can replace highly toxic dimethyl sulfate and phosgene in organic synthetic routes. The fastest‑growing consumption field is lithium‑ion battery electrolyte, mixed with other carbonates to adjust conductivity and stability. Besides battery sector, it is consumed for polycarbonate production, pharmaceutical and agro‑chemical intermediates, low‑VOC coating solvent, industrial degreasing cleaning agent and gasoline oxygen‑boosting additive.

Strong oxidizing acids may cause a vigorous reaction that is sufficiently exothermic to ignite the reaction products. Heat is also generated by the interaction with caustic solutions.
