Zeolite — Chemical Properties, Applications & Packaging

    Chemical Properties

Zeolite is a crystalline, microporous aluminosilicate material characterized by a highly ordered framework structure and significant ion-exchange and adsorption capacity. Its unique physicochemical properties make it suitable for applications across catalysis, water treatment, environmental protection, agriculture, polymer processing, and various industrial formulations.

    • Melting Point: >1600°C

    • Density: 1.9–2.3 g/cm³

    • Appearance: Fine powder

    • Color: White

    • pH: 8–11 (aqueous suspension)

    • Water Solubility: Insoluble in water

    • Storage Conditions: No special temperature restrictions required under normal storage conditions

    • Moisture Sensitivity: Hygroscopic; keep sealed and protected from excessive moisture

    • IARC Classification: Group 3, as referenced in Vol. 68 (1997)

    • EPA Substance Registry: Zeolites (CAS No. 1318-02-1)

    Key Applications

    1. Catalysis and Petrochemical Applications

Zeolite is widely utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst and catalyst support due to its porous molecular architecture, surface acidity, thermal stability, and shape-selective properties. It is applicable in processes including:

    • Selective disproportionation of toluene

    • Methanol conversion

    • Aromatic hydrocarbon conversion

    • Organic waste-gas purification and catalytic oxidation

    • Other petrochemical and polymer-related catalytic processes

    2. Ion Exchange and Water Treatment

The high cation-exchange capacity of zeolite enables efficient interaction with dissolved metal ions and ammonium species. It is used in:

    • Water purification and conditioning

    • Removal and exchange of calcium, magnesium, iron, and other ions

    • Ammonium removal

    • Environmental water-treatment systems

    • Ion-exchange applications in industrial and laboratory processes

Zeolite is also used in analytical applications involving the determination of nitrogen-related compounds in biological samples and in selected sugar-refining processes.

    3. Construction, Cement and Industrial Materials

Due to its thermal stability, mineral structure, adsorption capacity, and compatibility with inorganic formulations, zeolite can be incorporated into:

    • High-grade Portland cement composites

    • Construction and building materials

    • Mineral-based industrial formulations

    • Desiccant systems

    • Filler and functional additive applications

    4. Agriculture, Fertilizer and Feed Applications

Zeolite can function as an adsorbent, carrier, soil-conditioning material, and controlled-release medium. Applications include:

    • Fertilizer carriers and zeolite-based fertilizers

    • Pesticide granules

    • Soil amendments

    • Agricultural formulations

    • Feed additives

    • Nutrient and moisture management systems

    5. Polymer, Rubber and Chemical Industries

Its controlled particle size, mineral stability, adsorption characteristics, and reinforcing potential allow zeolite to be used as a functional filler in:

    • Plastics and resins

    • Rubber compounds

    • Polymer-processing formulations

    • Synthetic and artificial leather

    • Paints and coatings

    • Other specialty chemical formulations

    6. Cosmetics, Personal Care and Abrasive Applications

Finely processed zeolite may be incorporated into selected formulations as a mineral functional ingredient, adsorbent, or mild abrasive. Potential applications include:

    • Toothpaste and oral-care formulations

    • Cosmetic products

    • Specialized abrasive systems

    • Moisture-adsorbing formulations

    7. Gas Separation and Environmental Applications

The molecular-sieve and adsorption characteristics of zeolite support applications in gas separation and environmental engineering, including:

    • Separation of oxygen and nitrogen from air

    • Purification of industrial gases

    • Organic waste-gas treatment

    • Adsorption-based environmental control

    • Water and wastewater treatment

    8. Other Specialized Applications

Depending on zeolite grade, particle size, purity, and framework characteristics, it may also be employed in:

    • Potassium recovery from seawater

    • Electronics and specialty materials

    • Paper manufacturing

    • Food-related processing applications

    • Environmental remediation

    • Advanced adsorbent systems
