    —— Product Detail ——

    Product Overview

Agar is a natural polysaccharide derived from red algae, consisting of agarose and agaropectin with the molecular formula (C₁₂H₁₈O₉)ₙ and a molecular weight of approximately 3,000-5,000 Da. This white to off-white powder or strips is a widely used gelling agent in microbiology, cell culture, and molecular biology. It forms a gel at low concentrations and is particularly valuable for solid culture media due to its excellent gel strength and resistance to microbial degradation. Its unique properties, including a reversible gel-sol transition at around 85°C, make it essential for various laboratory applications.

    Synthetic Process

Agar is obtained through the following routes:

    • Extraction from red algae: Agar is extracted from red seaweed species using hot water extraction, followed by purification and drying.

    • Purification: The crude extract is purified by precipitation, washing, and drying.

Mechanism of Action / Application Principles

    • Microbiology: Used as a solidifying agent for microbial culture media.

    • Cell Culture: Used as a solid support for cell culture.

    • Molecular Biology: Used in gel electrophoresis and other molecular biology applications.

    ECHEMI Editorial Reference
Agar is produced by some red algae species (Rhodophyceae), especially Gelidium and Gracilaria. Agar contains two polysaccharides - agarose (agaran) and agaropectin. Agarose consists mainly of D-galactose and the 3,6-anhydro form of L-galactose, with small amounts of D-xylose. Some of the D-galactose units are methylated at C-6. The polymer contains alternatingsegments of α(1~3) linked D-galactose units and β (1~4) linked 3,6-anhydro-L-galactose. The main chains of agaropectin are similar, but c
