    ECHEMI Editorial Reference
Boron trifluoride, boron trichloride, boron tribromide and boron triiodide are four kinds of common boron halides, the last three kinds of halogenated boron can be made in the presence of carbonaceous reducing agent by the high-temperature oxidation reduction of halogens and diboron trioxide, the reaction equation is as follows: B2O3 + 3C + 3Cl2 = 2BCl3 + 3CO, boron trifluoride is obtained by interaction of hydrogen fluoride (fluorspar with concentrated sulfuric acid) and diboron trioxide. Decomposes on contact with alcohol. This produces toxic and corrosive fumes of hydrogen bromide. Reacts with water. This produces hydrogen bromide gas.|Decomposed by water or alcohol|Vapor (gas) specific gravity: 8.64; ratio of specific heats of vapor (gas): 1.140; heat of fusion: 2.9 cal/g|Critical volume: 272 cu cm/mol|For more Other Experimental Properties (Complete) data for BORON TRIBROMIDE (7 total), please visit the HSDB record page.

    Air and Water Reactions:

Fumes in air, evolving hydrobromic acid. Reacts vigorously with water or explosively [Mellor 5:124 1946-47]. Borob Tribromide reacts vigorously with water to generate gaseous HBr. Based on a scenario where the chemical is spilled into an excess of water (at least 5 fold excess of water), half of the maximum theoretical yield of Hydrogen Bromide gas will be created in 0.18 minutes. Experimental details are in the following: "Development of the Table of Initial Isolation and Protective Distances for the 2008 Emergency Response Guidebook", ANL/DIS-09-2, D.F. Brown, H.M. Hartmann, W.A. Freeman, and W.D. Haney, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois, June 2009.
