🔬 Basic Information

• Chemical Name: Decabromodiphenyl Ethane, also known as 1,1'-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis[pentabromobenzene].

• Molecular Formula & Weight: C₁₄H₄Br₁₀, molecular weight approx. 971.22.

• Appearance: White to off-white powder.

• Melting Point: Approx. 345°C, with excellent thermal stability and a decomposition temperature above 320°C.

• Solubility: Almost insoluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohols, ethers, and most organic solvents.

🏭 Main Applications

The core application of Decabromodiphenyl Ethane is as an additive flame retardant, developed to replace the earlier Decabromodiphenyl Ether (DecaBDE). With a bromine content as high as approximately 82%, its flame-retardant efficiency is outstanding.

It is widely used in the flame-retardant treatment of various polymer materials, including:

• Plastics & Resins: Such as HIPS, ABS, PP, PE, PBT, Nylon (PA), etc.

• Electrical & Electronics: Used in appliance housings, connectors, and insulation layers and coatings for wires and cables.

• Other Fields: Also applied in automotive components, building materials, textiles, and elastomers.

⚙️ Application Characteristics

• Performance Advantages: In addition to good thermal stability and high bromine content, it also offers strong UV resistance and low exudation.

• Synergistic Effect: It is typically used in combination with Antimony Trioxide (ATO) to further enhance flame-retardant efficiency, with a typical addition ratio of flame retardant to ATO at approximately 3:1. In plastics, adding 10%–20% DBDPE can achieve a UL94 V-0 flame-retardant rating.
