    Acrylic acid:

Methyl acrylate is a highly volatile, colorless liquid with a sharp odor. As the shortest carbon chain acrylate, it has extremely high reactivity and is highly prone to self-polymerization, classifying it as a flammable hazardous material. Its polymers offer excellent transparency, but the homopolymer tends to be brittle, making it ideal as a comonomer.

    Applications

It is primarily used as a second monomer in polyacrylonitrile (acrylic fiber) production to improve hand feel and dyeability. It is also widely used in manufacturing coatings, synthetic resins, adhesives, and textile/leather finishing agents. It also serves in plastic modification, paper coating, and as an organic synthesis intermediate.

    ECHEMI Editorial Reference
Methyl acrylate is a clear, colorless, corrosive liquid with a sharp, fruity odor. It is soluble in water and completely miscible with most organic solvents.

Methyl acrylate has a variety of industrial uses. the more important commercial uses of methyl acrylate include the preparation of thermoplastic coatings, use in the manufacture of acrylic and modacrylic fibers. In the fiber application, methyl acrylate is used as a comonomer with acrylonitrile. These acrylic fibers usually co

    Handling and Storage

    Precautions for safe handling

NO open flames, NO sparks and NO smoking. Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting. Do NOT use compressed air for filling, discharging, or handling. Handling in a well ventilated place. Wear suitable protective clothing. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid formation of dust and aerosols. Use non-sparking tools. Prevent fire caused by electrostatic discharge steam.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Fireproof. See Chemical Dangers. Cooled. Keep in the dark. Well closed. Store only if stabilized. Before entering confined space where this chemical may be present, check to make sure that an explosive concentration does not exist. Methyl acrylate must be stored to avoid contact with oxidizers (such as perchlorates, peroxides, permanganates, chlorates, and nitrates) since violent reactions occur. Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, well ventilated area away from heat and moisture. At temperatures above 20 deg C a violent reation could take place. Methyl acrylate should always be used with an inhibitor. Check that the correct concentration of inhibitor is used; if it is not, a violent reaction could occur. Sources of ignition, such as smoking and open flames, are prohibited where methyl acrylate is handled, used, or stored. Metal containers involving the transfer of 5 gallons or more of methyl acrylate should be grounded and bonded. Drums must be equipped with self-closing valves, pressure vacuum bungs, and flame arresters. Use only non-sparking tools and equipment, especially when opening and closing containers of methyl acrylate. Wherever methyl acrylate is used, handled, manufactured, or stored, use explosion-proof electrical equipment and fittings.
