Squalane is the fully hydrogenated and saturated derivative of squalene. Squalene is a natural component of human sebum (accounting for approximately 13% of the lipids on the skin surface). However, due to the presence of unsaturated double bonds in its molecular structure, it is unstable and prone to auto-oxidation and deterioration. Squalane overcomes this problem by hydrogenation, completely saturating the unsaturated bonds, significantly improving the long-term storage stability, making it a safer and more reliable choice in skin care products.
