1. Physical Properties

The anhydrous form consists of white granules, while the pentahydrate and nonahydrate forms are typically white crystalline powders or granules; they are odorless and have no peculiar smell. They are highly soluble in water, and all forms exhibit strong hygroscopicity; when exposed to air, they readily deliquesce and caking, so they must be stored in a sealed, dry container.

2. Chemical Properties

‌Strongly Basic‌: A 1% aqueous solution has a pH of 12–13. It possesses extremely strong pH buffering capacity and can stably neutralize various acidic contaminants.

‌Complexation and Water-Softening Capabilities‌: Silicate ions can form stable complexes with metal ions such as Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, and Fe³⁺ in water, thereby softening hard water and preventing scale formation.

‌Reactivity‌: It reacts with acids to form silicic acid precipitates; carbon dioxide in the air also reacts slowly with it to precipitate colloidal silicic acid.

‌Emulsifying and Dispersing Properties‌: Its aqueous solution saponifies and emulsifies grease-based contaminants, while also acting as an anti-flocculant to disperse solid contaminants, preventing their re-deposition.

‌Mild Corrosiveness‌: Concentrated solutions can irritate the skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract. They exhibit some corrosiveness toward light metals such as aluminum and zinc; however, they form a passivation layer during the cleaning process that provides short-term corrosion protection.

3. Main Applications

Detergent Industry‌: Used as a phosphate-free additive to replace sodium tripolyphosphate; widely used in laundry detergents, metal cleaners, and dishwashing detergents; serves as a core ingredient in phosphate-free detergent formulations.

‌Textile Printing and Dyeing‌: Used as a scouring aid for cotton fabrics and a stabilizer for hydrogen peroxide bleaching to enhance fabric bleaching effectiveness; also serves as a pretreatment aid in printing and dyeing to improve color uniformity.

‌Construction and Ceramics‌: Used to formulate acid-resistant mortar and concrete, and as a cement setting accelerator; in ceramic production, it serves as a grinding aid and slurry deflocculant, improving production efficiency.

‌Other Applications‌: Paper deinking, oil drilling mud conditioning, mineral flotation, food equipment cleaning, fabric fire retardants, and raw materials for silicone production, among others.
