Sodium dihydrogen phosphate, also known as monosodium phosphate (MSP), is an inorganic compound with the molecular formula NaH₂PO₄ . This product is the anhydrous form, appearing as a white crystalline powder . It is a high-purity reagent-grade and food-grade chemical supplied at ≥99% purity, widely used for buffer preparation, food processing, and various industrial applications .

Production Process

Food-grade sodium dihydrogen phosphate can be produced from wet-process dilute phosphoric acid through a multi-step process: membrane filtration for purification, neutralization reaction with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate, defluorination and desulfurization, removal of heavy metals and oxidative arsenic removal, pH adjustment, concentration, cooling crystallization, and drying . This method is easy to implement, low in cost, and produces high-purity product with good solubility .

Applications

• Buffer Preparation: The foundational acidic component in phosphate buffer systems, providing exceptional pH stability across the physiological range (pH 6.0-8.0) 

• Food Industry: Used as an acidity regulator, quality improver, emulsifier, and nutrient supplement in food processing . It is used in processed cheese, dairy products, meat products, and beverages 

• Cell Culture: Used in insect cell culture to adjust pH and as a component in culture medium for pig oocyte maturation and fertilization 

• Industrial Applications: Used in boiler water treatment, detergents, dyeing auxiliaries, and as a mordant in dyeing 

• Feed Additive: Used as a feed additive according to GB 34456-2017 standard
