• Hirudin (CAS 8001-27-2) is a potent natural anticoagulant derived from the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis. This 65-amino-acid polypeptide acts as a direct thrombin inhibitor, binding with high affinity to both the active site and exosite I of thrombin to block clot formation. Unlike heparin, hirudin does not require antithrombin III as a cofactor and effectively inhibits both free and clot-bound thrombin.
