Keywords: 1,4-Butanediol Diacrylate, BDDA, CAS 1070-70-8, Reactive Diluent, Difunctional Acrylate Monomer, UV Curable Crosslinker

1,4-Butanediol Diacrylate, commonly abbreviated as BDDA, is a difunctional acrylate monomer supplied as a colorless to pale yellow clear liquid. Carrying two acrylate groups on a four carbon butylene backbone, it works both as a reactive diluent and as a crosslinking agent in radiation curing systems. It is widely formulated into UV and EB curable coatings, printing inks, adhesives and specialty polymer networks.

    Key Highlights

    • DIFUNCTIONAL CROSSLINKER: Two acrylate end groups per molecule build a dense and uniform polymer network, lifting hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance of the cured film.
    • LOW VISCOSITY: About 8 cP at 25 C, so it thins high solids oligomer systems effectively and improves flow, leveling and pigment wetting without adding inert solvents.
    • HIGH CURING REACTIVITY: Polymerizes rapidly under UV or EB initiation, supporting high line speeds and solvent free formulations.
    • LOW VOLATILITY: Boiling point of 83 C at 0.3 mmHg and a vapor pressure of 0.83 hPa at 80 C keep evaporation loss low during coating and printing operations.
    • BROAD COMPATIBILITY: Blends readily with acrylate oligomers, polyester and epoxy acrylates, styrene, butyl acrylate and other common monomers and resins.
    • STABILIZED GRADE: Inhibitor stabilized to control premature polymerization, giving consistent viscosity and assay through storage and transport.
    • FLEXIBLE ORDER SIZE: MOQ of 1 kg up to full drum and IBC quantities, so trial formulations and bulk production can both be served.
    • DEPENDABLE SUPPLY: Standard lead time within 2 weeks after order confirmation, shipping by air or by sea to global markets.

    Product Description

1,4-Butanediol Diacrylate (BDDA, CAS 1070-70-8) is an aliphatic difunctional acrylate monomer produced by esterification of 1,4-butanediol with acrylic acid. Its molecular formula is C10H14O4 with a molecular weight of 198.22 g/mol. The product is offered as a colorless to pale yellow clear liquid with an assay of not less than 99.0% determined by gas chromatography, and it is stabilized with a small amount of hydroquinone type inhibitor, typically around 75 ppm, to maintain shelf stability.

The short four carbon spacer between the two acrylate groups gives BDDA a combination of high crosslinking efficiency and relatively low viscosity. At about 8 cP at 25 C it acts as an efficient reactive diluent: it lowers the viscosity of urethane acrylate, epoxy acrylate and polyester acrylate systems for easier coating, printing and spraying, and it then reacts into the film instead of evaporating. Because both ends of the molecule participate in free radical polymerization, the cured network shows improved hardness, scratch resistance, chemical resistance and adhesion balance compared with monofunctional diluents, while the aliphatic backbone supports good clarity and non yellowing performance in interior applications.

Dideu Group supplies this monomer to formulators in the coatings, inks, adhesives and specialty polymer industries. Standard packaging covers 20 kg drums, 200 kg drums and 1000 kg IBC containers, with an MOQ of 1 kg for formulation trials and full container quantities for routine production. Orders are normally ready within 2 weeks after confirmation, and shipments are arranged by air or by sea to global markets. Every batch is released with a certificate of analysis covering assay, appearance, color, moisture and stabilizer content, and technical documentation is provided to support customer qualification work.

    Applications

    Paints and Coatings

Used as a reactive diluent and crosslinking monomer in UV and EB curable wood, plastic, metal and paper coatings. It reduces formulation viscosity for better application properties and increases crosslink density for improved hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance of the cured film.

    Printing Inks and Overprint Varnishes

Serves as a low viscosity difunctional monomer in radiation curing offset, flexographic and screen inks, helping pigment dispersion, fast cure at high press speeds and good rub resistance in overprint varnishes.

    Adhesives and Sealants

Formulated into UV curable adhesives, pressure sensitive adhesive systems and sealants to raise cohesive strength and heat resistance through crosslinking, while keeping the adhesive layer optically clear.

    Plastics and Polymers

Acts as a crosslinking comonomer in the manufacture of polyacrylate and polyurethane acrylate networks, and as a comonomer in ion exchange resin production. It is also used in the preparation of polymer nanomaterials and nanocomposites where a rigid, densely crosslinked matrix is required.

    Textile and Leather Finishing

Applied as a textile product modifier in radiation curing finishing systems, contributing wash fastness, flexibility and surface durability to treated fabrics and coated leather.

    Optics, Electronics and Imaging

Used in optical films, hard coat and protective layer formulations, and as a component in photoresist and photopolymer plate systems where its bifunctional structure delivers defined, crosslinked image areas.

    3D Printing

Blended into photocurable resin formulations for vat photopolymerization and 3D printing to control viscosity, cure speed and the stiffness of printed parts.

    Research and Development

Used in laboratories for the preparation of hydrogels, electroactive polymer films, degradable thermoset networks and biomedical material studies, including dental composite and tissue engineering research formulations.
