Antimony potassium tartrate (tartar emetic) is a colorless crystalline inorganic salt supplied at ≥99.5% purity. It is soluble in water and has been used historically as an emetic, and currently as a reagent in analytical chemistry and in the textile industry as a mordant.

Synthetic Process
Antimony potassium tartrate is produced by the reaction of antimony trioxide with potassium hydrogen tartrate in aqueous solution, followed by crystallization.

Mechanism of Action
As an antimony(III) tartrate complex, it acts as a source of antimony ions in analytical and industrial applications. It also functions as a mordant by forming complexes with dyes.
