6-chloro-5-iodonicotinic acid Use and Manufacturing

A solution of 2-chloro-3-iodo-5-methylpyridine (20) (4.00 g, 15.8 mmol) in water (160 mL) was heated at 80 °C until complete dissolution. Potassium permanganate (6.24 g, 39.5 mmol) was added portionwise and the mixture was heated at 100 °C for 3 h. The hot solution was filtered over Celite 545, which was washed with water (3 x 20 mL). The combined filtrates were concentrated to half the volume and cooled to 0 °C. Concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid solution (37percent, w/w) was carefully added until pH = 1-2. The formed precipitate was filtered, washed with water (2 x 5 mL) and dried in a vaccum desiccator to give 6-chloro-5-iodonicotinic acid (23) (795 mg, 2.8 mmol) as a white solid. Yield 18percent; R
